About this project
Gift boxes are where paper crafting stops being a card and starts being a present. This one is built from two squares of cardstock scored on all four sides, and once you understand the relationship between the two squares you can make it in any size you like. I explain that relationship properly rather than just giving you numbers, so you can size a box to whatever you need to put in it. We finish with a coordinating band and a stamped tag.

Step-by-step instructions

- Cut two squares Cut the base at 5-1/2" square and the lid at 5-5/8" square. The lid is always 1/8" larger than the base — that eighth of an inch is the whole trick.
- Score the base Score at 1-1/4" on all four sides. Turn the paper a quarter turn between each score rather than flipping it.
- Score the lid Score the lid at 3/4" on all four sides. A shallower score gives a lid that lifts off cleanly instead of gripping.
- Cut the corners On each piece, cut in along one score line at each corner — never both. The uncut flap folds inside and becomes the corner.
- Assemble Fold the flaps in and adhere. Run adhesive on the flap, not the wall, so nothing squeezes out where it shows.
- Decorate Wrap a 1" band of designer paper around the base and add a stamped tag to the lid.
A tip from experience
If your lid is too tight, you scored it at the same depth as the base. If it falls off, the squares were cut too far apart. An eighth of an inch really is the entire difference.
